The Health Resources and Services Administration defines health disparities as population specific differences in the presence of disease, health outcomes, or even access to healthcare (Health Resources & Services Administration, 2016, para. 1). Age, race or ethnicity, sex, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, disability, and geographic location all contribute to an individual’s ability to achieve good health. Studies have shown that these groups have higher rates of chronic conditions along with higher prevalence of mortality and poorer health outcomes, when compared with other populations.
