One issue Home Base staff tends to deal with on a regular basis is no two situtations are the same, which creates unique barriers within itself. There is no one size fits all solution. To address these barriers Home Base has had to pull together and work as a team. Home Base’s management stresses the use of team “critical thinking” which allows all staff to give ideas and work together in finding the best possible way to address services for particular sitautions. It’s a “two minds is better than one” approach. Management stress the importance of thinking outside-the-box. Home Base uses all methods of communication, face-to-face, text, emails, and phone in order to pull all minds together to determine how to deal with barriers. Being aware of loacal agencies gives staff the knowledge of know who would be able to assist with meeting the client’s needs when staff is unable to. Sometimes in a rural area dual relationships happen when working with clients. Knowing other agencies that can assist in workiing with the client can help this not happen.
• Resource Directories: Resouce directories are updated yearly to include local resources avaialable to all clients. These resource directories are then given to the clients when staff first meets with them.
• Random: When staff catch-up with each other in the office setting, most times information will be shared regarding their clients and barriers he or she is dealing with. Staff at the office will give suggestions of how to address the situation.
There is no doubt working in a rural environment can be difficult, but using the teamwork approach, as Home Base does, can definitely help the process of critical thinking be more successful. Critical thinking takes a different approach than just simply thinking through the process. Critical thinking requires more creativety and out-of-the-box thinking.
