I. Introduction
Speeches have the power the enthrall those who listen, they have the ability to change the minds of millions. The research question I used was, in what ways does the word choice in the speech “HeForShe” help to promote the major theme of gender inequality? The reason that this is important is that word have the ability to shape the thoughts and opinions of those who read or listen to it, which is what this speech does. The main points that I intend to make are that word choice is important when it comes to speeches, that her celebrity status puts her in a better position to be listened to and finally how she uses first person through the speech to deliver her message. The speech was given in 2014 at the United Nations, which is quite recent and still the prevalence of gender inequality persists. The main theme of the speech revolves gender inequality around the world and the need for change. It is also important to note that she is a famous actress and with that in mind it does have a bigger impact than if this speech were given by someone less known or just any other ordinary woman. It is also because of this she is listened to even though she is a proclaimed feminist, which has become akin to someone who hates men. In some regards it may very well be her status as a celebrity that gives her the ability to have a platform to speak, however it is the content of the speech that determines whether or not it is worthy of being heeded. The speech stresses the importance for the involvement of men as it is a complex issue that women alone cannot overcome. Even though there have been great strides over the past few decades to try and give equal rights to women there are still large discrepancies. It seems in this day and age it would be impossible that a man and a woman who do the same job, the woman is paid less. This speech makes the point that these archaic practices need to end and for that to occur that men must join with women to make this
