There are many people from all around the world who belong to a different culture in which they may practice a form of rites and rituals, whether it be religious, spiritual or a traditional custom. Cultural rites and rituals are traditionally instituted and structured into our life and have long been performed throughout many years. Our cultural backgrounds have been passed down through many generations and have structured our religions, customs and beliefs. It is through our ancestors, that we are usually structured and molded into becoming who we are. Through the study of anthropology, we are given a closer perspective of the various aspects of culture and the norms and values that were inherited from the past that continue to be practiced in today’s society. Rites and rituals are a basic human instinct and are essential to our every day life. The term “rites” refers to a religious act, and on the other hand, while very closely connected, the term “ritual” usually refers to a repetitive act, meaning it is performed more than one time. For example Scott Cunningham, the author of “Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner” began practicing Wicca while he was underage and living at home. While living with his parents, he was restricted to a limited amount of resources and tools to perform rituals, which Cunningham was then forced to perform simplified rituals. He would light candles and softly chant and whisper full moon incantations.
