65 percent of our bodies is water. Every living organism on Earth needs water to survive, and it allows the Earth to thrive. Water is one of the most valuable things to humanity and in more ways than to quench one’s thirst. Something valuable is physical or abstract that is considered good, and is determined by oneself or the public view of it. People around the world have completely different value systems that they use to guide their life and make decisions that fit what they value. The stories examined value systems that the characters had, and obvious values arose like money and companionship; however, deeper and more unusual values are evident as well. He comes out of the lamp ready to grant Hazel wishes that almost anyone would desire. She surprises him and says she does not wish for anything. On the road to get to know each other and as the Genie learns that Hazel has no gap in her life that could be filled with wishes, they sit down and talk about their pasts. “We wound up in a public park, sitting on a bench by a lake” (Gaiman). The Genie found out about Hazel’s past, and Hazel found out about the war that the genie had experienced. While they sat by the lake, the genie found out what made Hazel’s values from her past. This was an important step to him changing his values from having to please everyone to being happy with what he has. Later, Hazel asks the genie to do a couple of chores to keep himself busy. “I raked the leaves into a heat by the hydros, to stop the wind from blowing it apart. After dinner, I washed up the dishes” (Gaiman). An important change happened he used the water in the sink to clean the dishes. Hazel did not wish for him to do this, she just requested. The Genie realizes that his value system is not the best and that he should change it to being thankful for what he has. Values make up everyone’s personality, and water has a large effect on both. In Libya and many other third world countries, there is a large shortage of clean water. For this reason, many people are sick with illnesses contracted from the dirty water, and it makes life for these people very hard. When clean water is not accessible it is hard to have morally right values to lead one’s actions because there is a much higher priority on survival than right values. However, in countries like ours, clean water is easily accessible and we have the ability to have well guided value systems and if they are not, there is the ability to change them. Water is just two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen, but it has a large impact on the world and the values that people use to steer them through
