This week I was able to do a small site visit when I turned in my paperwork. Unfortunately, I was not able to see where they kept the children because my background check and other important information had not yet been processed, but I was still able to get a good idea of what volunteering at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery will be like. When I first pulled up, I was very surprised at the building the nursery was in. I was expecting a fun environment which would be filled with toys scattered around in the grass and playground equipment. However, the building was old and the neighborhood was not in a better part of town which surprised me. It was right alongside of a busy road where lots of vehicles were whizzing by. I once again used my preconceived notions and experiences I have had from my time spent in St. Louis to not even make eye contact with them and just walk straight passed them. I felt bad when I saw a worker carry out their daughter. I had judged these people without looking at them closely and before I even spoke to them. This is one of my weaknesses that I know if. I have not really had many opportunities to just talk to others who are drastically different from me. I have lived in such a sheltered little town that I did not get those opportunities that many others around this area have. That is why I am excited about working in the crisis nursery. I get a hands on experience of others who are not the same as me. This will help me as a pharmacist because more likely than not I will be dealing with individuals of different races, cultures, and religions. Getting to know others will help me eliminate my own prejudices and replace them with more accurate representation of
