Personal Narrative: My Volunteer Work

Improved Essays
I completed my volunteer work at three different organizations, The Center, King 's Harvest and North Star Community Center. The first organization I volunteered at was The Center which is a non profit organization that has been around since 2009. Its mission is to alleviate and minimize the pain and suffering of those facing oppression. They focus on three main groups the youth, the homeless and community development. The center focuses on using a holistic approach to helping these underserved people by educating them and providing assistance in a way that doesn’t just help mentally but also helps them physically and spiritually. The second organization I volunteered at was King’s Harvest which is an organization that serves the poor and …show more content…
Growing up I’ve never had to deal with poverty or pretty much any struggle financially. So working with the kids at the center has really gave me a appreciation for what I have and to not let any opportunity go. It’s really given me a new perspective into a whole different life style, hearing all of these kids stories really made me think of how lucky I am to be in the place I am today and to not take anything for granite. I feel as if the King’s Harvest volunteer experience just set the lessons I learned from the Center even more in stone. Working with the homeless gave me a view into a more extreme version of poverty. Meeting and talking with these people that have pretty much nothing but the clothes on there body and yet still having a positive outlook on life has really given me a new perspective on life. I’ve learned that rather than complaining about little things and letting it negatively impact my life, I should just let it go and see the positives in everything because things could always be …show more content…
I used the chapter on cleanliness to create a presentation for poverty-stricken people at King’s Harvest. I used the basic guidelines of cleanliness as my basis in which I tried to educate the poor individuals about the importance of always trying to wash your hands, and the benefits of taking a shower, especially if the person is sweating, doing this can prevent things like skin infections and rashes. I also used pieces about cleanliness in eating and drinking from the chapter in my demonstration also. The book had a lot of good facts I used such as don’t let flies on the food you 're going eat because they can carry germs and spread disease and only eat raw meat if it 's cooked completely or else it can carries a lot of dangerous bacteria. I also used the care of the teeth and gums section of the book to inform them on why it’s so important to try to brush your teeth, because it helps prevent all types of nasty things such as cavities, rotting teeth and gum disease. In this chapter it also talks about how you can make your own toothbrush and toothpaste which I presented to the people because some of the individuals might not be able to access an actual tooth brush. The chapter on health and illnesses of children provided me a much better understanding of the health issues associated with these disabled individuals before I started volunteering. Before reading

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

After watching all three of the videos required per this assignment, I found the first video the most interesting. The other two didn’t really capture my attention as much as this one did. I appreciate how Jessica Green opened up her speech providing us facts such as: “In the human development world 90% of us live our life’s indoors, where we breathe in, and come into contact with over a trillion life forms called microorganisms”. She also goes into great detail describing to us how these air borne microorganisms are transferred into our living environment, which is colonized by many type of microorganisms. She briefly touched base on the fact that…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I completely agree with you. I also felt the greatest challenge I will face will being able to receive sufficient funding. I found it interesting how you have witnessed policies, regarding funding, change without your knowledge. I'm sure it happens more often than we are aware of. I as well hope to be in a position that allows me to make changes to better serve my clients.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…

I devoted myself to being a key part of the interact club. I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

Setting three different alarms, placing my waiver near the front door, wearing my thick cotton pants, hoodie, and socks, I would then lie fast asleep in bed. Waking up to the nettlesome sounds of my alarms ringing in my ears, rubbing the sand from my eyes, walking to the bathroom, I instinctively move both of my arms to cover my eyes from the shining bulbs that illuminate the bathroom. As I get ready for the morning, the sun is still shining on the other side of the world and everyone is still fast asleep. I quietly creep into my parents bedroom and with a nudge, my father hastily gets up and prepares to drive me to the service event. When I arrived at the service event, my club officer did a roll call and then we were set to go inside of the warehouse.…
