Reflection On The Visit To Touro Synagogue

Improved Essays
The visit to Touro Synagogue was not my first time in the building but it was my first time attending the service. When I was a senior in high school my religion classes required me to visit a synagogue and acquire some history about the synagogue. Therefore, when this class required us to attend the Touro Synagogue I knew exactly where it was. I took my visit on a Saturday morning and to my surprise it was a bar mitzvah. Therefore, not only would this be my first time attending a service but also a bar mitzvah. The family was very welcoming and came an introduced themselves to our group and gave us a little history about the tradition of a bar mitzvah. Once the service started, it reminded me of the catholic services attended in high school. The service was very upbeat and included many songs. The experience overall was very interesting and something I may want to experience again in the future. Throughout this experience I was unsure of my emotions. When I first entered the synagogue I was confused and a little uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable …show more content…
Some values that I show in this experience was the value of service. The young man whose bar mitzvah we attended had to do a service project where he raised money for guide dogs. Service is a very important aspect of my life as I’ve always been involved in community service and I enjoy giving back to people. My love for community service is the reason I had decided to go into the health field. I knew I could not stomach being a doctor because I do not like the sight of blood but being a pharmacist I can still contribute to the well being of others without facing a fear of mine. I think it is great that the church and the family are instilling these values into their children at a young age because we need more people giving back just because they love to and not for a

Think about how personal experiences shape the way that one thinks, acts, and even speaks. Are these things positive or negative? Why do these experiences do this, and how do they affect everyone else's values? For instance, compare the two texts, "Mother to Son" and "A Celebration of Grandfathers". These two texts are great examples of how personal experiences shape people's values.…

James Howe's "James Goldblatt is So Not Moses" is a short story about the highly enmeshed bar mitzvah of Jeremy Goldblatt. Unlike many others, Jeremy cares more about the experience and meaning, not what other people think or the presents he will receive. Even the rabbi said Jeremy's views were different than previous pupils and that he was a sweet kid who cares about what really matters. In an effort to be inclusive, Jeremey invites Candy Andy, a homeless vagrant who is considered "crazy" by everyone, to his bar mitzvah. At the bar mitzvah, Jeremy hands the Torah to Candy Andy in a quite risky move and Candy Andy dances around the synagogue and sings Looney Tunes.…

Sticky Faith is a book of hope and a book of practicality. It begins by bringing to the light the issue that Christian teens all face when they go off to college: will their faith stick or will they leave it in the past as simply a high school hobby. The book begins with something they like to call, “the not-so-sticky-faith reality.” It lays the foundation for the rest of the book by presenting all of the facts and statistics about the faith in teens in high school verses once they get to and graduate from college.…

This week’s group dynamics class had us outside the “fishbowl” observing the other group. We were to make observations while the other group is attempting to build a tower which needed to be freestanding without any sort of support for a given time. I believe the length of time was about a minute, but then that is pretty long, and so, I am unsure as I can’t remember. Another crucial aspect was that the tower was to be built out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows.…

My passion to be a teacher in the Catholic school system has started a long time ago when I decided the teaching profession was for me. I was just coming out of my Catholic high school and I had made a decision to take a Bachelor of Health Science Degree, in physical education and biology with the end goal to become a high school teacher. It was during this time when I noticed myself asking for help a lot and depending on God’s plan to determine my success. " Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.…

What makes the perfect parent? Countless magazines and websites strive to answer the question but often possess differing opinions on what techniques and parenting styles will foster the ideal child. In Chaim Potok’s novel, The Chosen, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders grow up in polar opposite households. While both practice Judaism, their separate sects often highlight differences in their respective upbringings. Literature mimics real life and while reading, I found myself comparing the boys’ friendship to that of my closest friend and I.…

I don’t think I consciously realized such a thing actually existed, let alone recognized an ability to define it. Values and morals cannot only guide but inspire you a passion for living and doing something meaningful. For example, gymnastics is something that has helped me establish my morals. Being a competitive gymnast helped me get things accomplished and kept my head on straight. Participating in such an intense sport kept me in the best shape and set my priorities right. When my other friends were out at night, as you could say “living it up,” I was home resting up for practice the next morning.…
