Virtue Ethics and Computer Engineering
Virtue Ethics has been around for centuries and even today brings value to the lives of people. Virtue Ethics aims to achieve living “The good life”, this theory states that if one wants to do well then they must be good. As a Computer Engineer, I believe that doing well means doing something that would bring meaning into the world. Promoting goodness and living an altruistic life to create a positive impact that could make the world a better place. The virtues that I have personally developed and deem are necessary to flourish as a Computer Engineer would be the virtues of honesty, working hard, and being able to communicate with others on a …show more content…
Aristotle believed that to live “the good life” you must flourish, and the only way to flourish would be to feel good about the work that you were doing and improving the virtues that you set for yourself. Another thought that he mentioned was that to achieve true happiness one must have the sense of being complete and whole. Being a firm believer of the everyday actions that we make for ourselves, he believed that the virtue in our soul was projected out through these specific actions. Aristotle believed that if you can figure out what the human soul can make possible, then you will actually be able to manifest your virtues. I am thankful to both my parents and Texas A&M University encouraging me to be honest, work hard, and showing me how to communicate with the outside world. Trust is something that is very hard to earn and easily lost, that Is why honesty is so important, trust is built on honesty. Honesty is an important virtue in Computer Engineering solely because if you are honest then you will be able to communicate your thoughts and feelings to your employers and will help create bridges instead of walls in group projects. Not only will being honest help build trust between you and your employer, but it might even help you learn something new. For example, you're working on a project, and run into an error that you can’t fix, instead of buying time and putting it off, you can admit that you need help and you’ll walk away with new information. A consequence of being honest could be in a situation where everyone around you is busy with their own projects and you admitting that you need help pushes them back from finishing at their assigned deadlines. Secondly, working hard can lead to others acknowledging your work ethic, you get your work done on time, and set an example for everyone around you. A consequence of working hard could be that you move up in the ranks faster than others and that alone is enough to
