Values In Nursing Practice

Values are characteristics that are the driving force to the nursing practice. Every nurse has a different list of values that they exhibit through their care and practice. By seeing different areas from the hospital and clinic, I was able to see different values in action.
One of the foundations that the nursing profession is based upon is the value of caring. Caring is a value that I saw used in every situation and experience that I saw while in this clinical rotation. One specific example that I remember vividly was during the time where the newborn I was assigned was upset to be in the nursery and away from her mother. In order to do the hearing screen properly, the baby had to stop crying and fussing around. To calm her, the nurse held

To be able to establish the value of wisdom, a person has to know not only what textbooks and research says about something, but also what happens in practice. In order to build this value in my future, I will have to be very attentive not only to my patient’s care, but also to those nurses and doctors who have much more experience than I do. By listening to the nurses who have been practicing for years, I will be able to learn far more than I would by sticking to what I find on my …show more content…
The day that I was in the clinic, I watched this nurse message providers, patients, and other staff about a variety of situations varying from prescriptions and appointments to lab results. This particular nurse came across a patient who had called the clinic wanting a change in his dose for Viagra. The nurse was able to get the patient on the phone and ask him a variety of questions about what he was experiencing. By using her value of professionalism, the nurse was able to make what could have been an awkward conversation, something comfortable for the patient. Also, she was able to figure out the exact problem and address it with a physician so the man was able to get a proper dosage for his needs. I, as a student nurse and future nurse, should demonstrate the value of professionalism with every patient I encounter. I plan to continue demonstrating this value by continually learning in school how to interact with patients in a professional manner. Furthermore, I can demonstrate this value by showing respect and autonomy for the patient. Throughout my nursing career, I may experience situations that can be uncomfortable but, by exhibiting professionalism, I will be able to keep the patient comfortable and willing to discuss the problems they are

Philosophy of Nursing I believe that the philosophy you use as a nurse should incorporate values you already live by. Becoming a nurse doesn’t change how important I believe it is to treat people with respect, compassion and dignity. For me, writing this paper has provided me with the knowledge I will use in clinical settings and after graduation. I have learned the importance of empathy regarding nurse-client relationships. It is crucial that I do not focus more time on the practical duties of nursing and miss what is most important to the patients at present time – their emotional suffering (Sealy, 2011). The use of empathy initiates many other skillful communicative techniques. With empathy follows trust, likeability, and efficiency.…
