Mrs. Sharon Tanks, RN, MSN,MPA,RN,NEA-BC,MSCN is currently a nurse manager for the spinal cord injury/disorders/multiple sclerosis center of excellence department (SCI/D) at the Veteran’s Hospital located in East Orange, NJ. She manages a fourteen bed unit with eleven nurses and nine ancillary staff. Besides managing a fourteen bed unit, she also manages the outpatient spinal cord injury clinic located on the unit. Mrs. Tanks started as a unit nurse in the SCI/D unit and over the course of her career advanced to nurse manager. Mrs. Tanks serves on the quality assurance and clinical outcomes committee at the VA Hospital. She has exceptional critical thinking skills and extensive experience and knowledge in her specialty as well as in leadership …show more content…
Tanks embodies the qualities of a transformational leader. She empowers her staff to be change agents, which leads to quality care for veterans. She shows her leadership with her charisma, inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration. According to Atkinson, charismatic leaders possess self-confidence, self-direction, and an absence of internal conflict (2011). Four important characteristics of the transformational leader include being an effective communicator, possessing inspirational traits, having a trustworthy character, and promoting teamwork (Atkinson, 2011). When transformational leadership in nursing is used it integrates employees in the organization’s vision, thus leading to a sense of empowerment and motivation.
