Primarily, touch is a caring intervention that serves to promote comfort, protection, health, and well-being. Touch may be shown through various actions such as, holding one’s hand in times of sadness or giving gentle massages. The touch that accompanies massages can make one’s presence and experiences feel accepted and acknowledged. In addition, this human connection can provide a sense of security and empowerment in times of vulnerability, as well as instill happiness by freeing the individual from feelings of being isolated. For touch to be perceived in a caring manner, the health care provider must offer time, devotion, and acceptance of the client’s experiences.
