Importance Of Tom Robinson In To Kill A Mockingbird

Just imagine being imprisoned because of an absurd accusation, but having everybody believe it just because of your race, something that you can’t choose. To Kill a Mockingbird is written by Harper Lee. Atticus is a father of two children, their names are Jem and Scout. Scout’s real name is Jean Louis, but everybody calls her Scout. Atticus is also a lawyer taking on a case of a lifetime defending Tom Robinson. The setting throughout the book takes place in a little town called Maycomb. It does make sense for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson.

To begin, Atticus should have defended Tom Robinson because a lawyer must do his job. For example, when Scout is asking Atticus why he’s defending a negro, Atticus responds with Tom Robinson as simply just a negro man, nothing bad about it. “I’m defending a negro - his name’s Tom Robinson.” (100). This quote illustrates that Atticus has respect for Tom, he doesn’t care if he’s colored or not. He is also defending him simply because it’s his job. Another

For example, Tom is right-handed and t is most likely Mayella was hit by a left-handed person. Tom can not use his left hand due to an accident. “He got it caught in a cotton gin, caught it in Mr. Dolphin Raymond’s cotton gin when he was a boy… like to bled to death… tore all the muscles loose from their bones.” (186). All of the evidence so far points to Mayella being beaten by a left-handed person, and Tom can’t use his left hand. Another example is when Atticus has Bob Ewell sign his name on a piece of paper. “‘What’s so interestin?’ He asked. ‘You’re left-handed Mr. Ewell.’ Said Judge Taylor.” (237). Mayella was most likely beaten by a left-handed person, and her father, Bob, is left-handed. Tom’s left hand is useless. Mayella was beaten by her father, and they blamed Tom for it. Although, back in their time, this was common for a black person to take the blame for a crime they didn’t

This case shows that Atticus was not a follower of mainstream beliefs and that his choices had separated him from the rest of the town. “Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience—Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man” (p.108). During the 1930's, segregation towards African Americans were prevalent in the South. The novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, illustrated the theme of taking a stand when Atticus Finch stood up for Tom Robinson during a court case in which Robinson was accused for raping Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell's daughter. Atticus shouldn't have taken a stand in this situation because it put people who had relations with him (including himself) in danger and people's opinions about him changed for the worst. Firstly, it is not worth it for Atticus to take a stand because his family was put in danger.…

Atticus, in contrast to many other characters in the novel, does not accept the institutionalized racism that is entrenched into Maycombian society. Instead, he fights racial prejudice because he views it as fundamentally flawed and stemming from a lack of empathy and understanding for those outside one’s social group. Furthermore, Atticus’ emotional investment in Tom Robinson’s case shows the personal level on which racism affects him. When discussing with Scout why he was defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explained, “… every lawyer gets a case at least once in his life that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.”…

This exemplifies how the town resented Atticus for simply doing what he believe to be the right thing to do; which is why even though Atticus had no intention of influencing the town’s idea of justice for Tom Robinson, he influenced the white community, who just so happen to have been the ones to decide Tom’s fate. This once again proves that while unintentional a single individual how the power to alter or change what another person perceives as…
