A two party system is when only two political parties dominate the party system each going back and forth between who wins the elections. New Zealand’s two party system was said to be “an almost pure two party system. However, there was a small amount of people who were voting for other smaller parties besides the big two. This can lead on to the significant change that is from two party to a multi-party system. A multi-party system is a system that gives all parties the chance to run in an election with all parties having an equal chance of getting control of the government. New Zealand started using the multi-party system in 1996. This change can show the significance of how New Zealand is moving away from the fact that the government can be run by more than just two party systems. One reason for the change to multi-party system includes the fact that voters tended to look at smaller parties instead of the big two parties so they opted for a multi-party system. This change made multi-party seem like it could stabilise the New Zealand government for the future as no one party could dominate the government. A single party government is when one party who gains majority of the votes in a general election will be guaranteed control of the government. Usually with this system you can tell who is going to gain control over the government before they even count the votes. This system of government saw the party gain the ability to pass any bills they wanted because it would already have majority of the voters. The government could rarely be defeated.
