Having a little sister who looks up to me puts things in perspective for me and makes me want to be as the best person I can be for her sake. I keep my grades up, stay involved in extracurriculars, participate in community service and hope that she will do the same. This is one of the reasons I can say with confidence that I will remain substance free as a peer leader. Not only do I keep in mind how much is at stake if I am caught drinking (like college, sports, clubs) but I also would not want other kids, especially my siblings, to think it is okay to drink because they have a high opinion of me. Last year, my Peer Leaders, Amanda Gougen and Jonathan Schiff, started off the first meeting a name game and an icebreaker. This helps show members that they may have something in common that they did not know about which will hopefully lead to new friendships. Amanda, especially, was skilled at compelling our group to engage in conversation by bringing up topics that everyone could relate to or had an opinion on. Also, it would be beneficial for the peer leading program to host a tournament, such as volleyball, powderpuff or even an obstacle course, between peer groups. This gives groups the opportunity to bond over a common goal and encourages them to work together. Another aspect that could be added to the peer leading program is a third community service project. The freshmen walk is in the fall, the gift drive is in the winter and I think we should implement a “Go Green” around the time of Earth Day in the spring. Peer Leaders would urge their groups to bring in empty cans which will then be recycled through the state and the school would redeem about ten cents a can. Not only does this promote environmental health, we can also donate the money raised by the program to an organization like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the World Land Trust or the Center for Biological Diversity.
