In order to run a safe and efficient airport the Airport Safety Self-Inspection program is a significant part of an airport’s certification performance requirements. It is important to note that the program is governed by FAR Part 139 which only applies to airports serving air carrier operations. So as mentioned part 139 is the regulation for the self-inspection program and is assisted by the FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 150/5200-18C. The schedule for how often an airport must complete an airport inspection is described in the first part 139 stating each certificate holder of a part 139 certification must inspect the airport to assure compliance daily, except as otherwise required by the ACM, when required by any unusual condition, such as construction …show more content…

Special inspections of activities and facilities should be conducted when an unusual condition or unusual event occurs on the airport, such as a significant meteorological event or an accident or incident for example after a major hurricane the pavement should be closely inspected for ponding and edge damage. Special inspections should also be conducted at the end of construction activity to ensure that there are no unsafe conditions present related to the construction activity prior to construction personnel leaving the airport. (U.S. DOT, FAA, 2004) Special condition inspections may include the inspection of any of the specific facilities or activities under the other three components. After learning about all of the different inspections and what is included in each it is no wonder why the Airport Safety Self-Inspection program is mandatory in order to run a safe and efficient airport. It is a significant part of an airport’s certification performance requirements. While the AC 150/5200-28 provides a list of items to include when inspecting an airport it is important to note that this list is not inclusive and the airport manager should tailor the inspections specific to his or her own
