“10 Rules for Teachers and Students” by John Cage and Corita Kent lay out a baseline for necessities a designer, or people of any profession, must possess to be successful. There are three of these rules that are very important to me as a designer. These three rules deal with self-discipline, hard work, and happiness. These three helpful rules are implemented in my life every day, as a design student, as an older sibling, and as a practitioner of the Catholic faith. However, there is one rule that seem less useful to me that deals with making mistakes. This is most evident in my design classes. We’ll often be sent off expected to make 40 drawings for the next class. It takes a lot of work to get an assignment like this done in time and that is exactly why the only thing I can do is work and continue to work until the job is done. When it comes to being a big brother I must always work to keep improving myself, and setting a better example for my sisters to follow. I can always do more around the house to show them both that hard work does pay off, and makes our parents proud. Lastly, I must always continue to work at my faith. If I don’t continue to go to church and read scripture, my faith is weakened. The only way to strengthen it is to work at it, to read the Bible, to go to mass every Sunday. I disagree with that because I’ve made many mistakes in my life. I made the mistake of coming to design class the other day without a sketch pad. Everyone makes mistakes, without them we would have no way of learning. Because everyone makes mistakes, I believe this rule is misguiding.
In conclusion, many of Cage and Kent’s rules play big roles in my life, however not all of them make sense to me. Self-discipline, hard work, and happiness make up my life. They are a part of almost every aspect of my life including school, my life as an older brother, and my life as a Catholic.
