As a child, we’re all asked the reputed question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Most of us would say things like, “a famous person,” or, “a superhero,” but, eventually, many of these children would grow up to become doctors or scientists or even musicians…. However, few of them would actually go into the profession of teaching.
As of the last 25 years, the numbers of those who become teachers has been cut in half. As this problem grows larger and larger with each year, the quality of education in U.S. schools declines further and further. As you show students how to unlock their creativity and develop character, you get to see not only the challenge that a student takes on, but also the fruits of your labor. Many teachers will give this as their number one reason for teaching, as watching a student master a topic can be exciting and fulfilling. According to a study by Andre Bishay of Harvard University, teachers say that they “Strongly agree” with the statement, “Educating the young is important to me,” and math and science teachers were the happiest among them. Sometimes, the challenge of helping a student who is having a difficult time with a particular topic that you love can be a rush for the teachers lucky enough to be able to help them understand different concepts.
On top of that, a career in teaching provides variety and autonomy as teachers can develop a schedule that fits the needs of the students, along with how they would like to introduce it. Being able to have freedom to apply your skills and knowledge how you wish is a major plus, especially considering that most jobs require a lengthy training period and are rigidly structured. This is something most people with non-teaching jobs crave, as they wish to do things in the manner that suits them best, and hope to get away from the repetition that most jobs
