I Want To Teach ELL Essay

When I was presented with career choices at the end of high school, teaching was not one of my interests, as a matter fact, my choices were: pediatrician, vet and English major. However, I found myself moving to the United States and marrying the love of my life at the age of 18 – this is when it all changed. After being in the United States for about a year, a friend of mine contacted me to let me know about a job opening to help non-native English speakers to learn English. I was very hesitant at first. I wasn’t sure if I should apply for a job that required me to teach others English when I myself was trying to overcome the barrier of the language. Despite my doubts I decided to apply for this position. I was very surprised when I received …show more content…
Learning a new language is such a roller coaster, it has so many ups and downs, and I understand those ups and down because I had to and sometimes still have to go through them. My experiences learning English is another reason why I want to teach ELL. I believe that I have an understanding and compassion for these students that other people may not have because they don’t understand what it is like to be thrown into a classroom full of people speaking a language completely unfamiliar to you. They don’t understand the frustration of being mute when there is so much that needs to be said. The awful feeling when you finally decide to speak and people laugh because of your mistakes or accent, but I do, I do understand these feelings. I understand how difficult it is to come to a country with a different culture, a different live style and a different language. I understand the work that takes to overcome the language barrier and I think I can help children understand that with work and effort it is possible to break down that barrier; it is possible to overcome those fears and learn. I want them to know that it is ok to make mistakes while learning. I want them to “come out of their shells”. I want to help them to be successful at

As I previously stated, I come from an average middle class family so I never was in the shoes of a culturally and linguistically diverse student. From the stories of my peers and what I have learned in ESL courses, this relationship is arguably the most important in an ESL student’s educational career. The attitude of a teacher can either greatly aid in building the student’s confidence and seal their path to success, as was the case with Robert in Literacy con Cariño, or can greatly deter a child from ever wanting to risk the possible failure that comes with learning a new…

Some students, like Francisco, are afraid to open their mouths and try to speak English for the fear of sounding stupid or using the wrong word. This gives them a person to help explain things and ask questions in their first language, which will help them relax more and feel more comfortable in the classroom environment. It is very important that teachers speak slowly and clearly, and provide students with enough time for their responses, whether in speaking or writing. These students are thinking and producing in two languages. This wait time provides the students the opportunity to think and process because ELLs typically need a little extra time.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Going into this class my thoughts of what an ELL was before reading Coehlo (2004) and Li, Myles, & Robinson (2012) was someone who had immigrated to Canada and English was not their first language. It is probably a common assumption among the majority of the population even though it is a wrong one. I also only viewed an ELL as someone who is initially learning the language, but as talked about in the lesson, the learning never really stops. I never would have viewed an individual who is a Canadian citizen, and has been in Canada for quite a while as an ELL.…

According to “Supporting Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Learners in English Education” it states that I would slow down my speech and use shorter sentences when teaching a lesson or communicating. I would avoid expressions that are commonly used on a day to day bases. I would also use think-pair-share when asking questions because this will give time for ELLs to communicate with other students and brainstorm together. Another good strategy would be using bilingual handouts and use metaphors when comparing and contrasting. The instructional opportunities that would encourage ELL’s home language as a foundation to support the development of phonics and phonological awareness in English is to incorporate their home language and culture into the lesson plans.…

    1. What are the advantages of teaching ELLs in their native language? And what might be some disadvantages? Teaching ELLs in their native language provides them with a solid foundation and easier development of language, enhanced thinking skills, and concepts that are clarified and organized.
