I had to invest time online finding websites that would teach me on how to write papers with the right formatting. The information provided by my teacher also helped out a lot when it came to writing with the proper format, and I believe that was the foundation for the perfect structure to my essay. For example, when our teacher gives us a new assignment, she provides links, insight, and references as how the work should be complete for a better grade. Although she provided this amazing information for my classmates and myself, I still managed to find problems writing a great essay, due to the fact that English is my second language. American Psychological Association has many rules when it comes to citing works, creating a heading, numbering every page, and having a well set reference page. Citing pieces of works to my writing was definitely a huge challenge to me because never before did I have to cite papers that I had previously written in school. One of the things that really set me up for success was when my teacher provided a video tutorial on how to properly cite pieces in the paragraphs correctly. The class provided a serious challenge due to the amount of time given, to the work that had to be

Never assume that you will not be good at something when you did not give yourself the time to put your brain to work. A statement that I heard multiple times but that make sense, once again, with this class. I walked in with uncertain and thin writing abilities, and the fear not to be able to align five, different and acceptable essays. However, because of my openness to what would be offered, I acquired and sharpened a great deal of skills. Among which the ability to invent, deliver and edit a text, with the purpose to narrate, criticize or simply analyze, in conformity to the rules of Standard Edited American English. I learned how to stimulate my reader’s senses; grasped the techniques to apply when it comes to writing under pression, and most importantly, I learn to appreciate and incorporate other writer’s input through the writing circle.…

Reflection is to revise, to rethink and to take a step back and make sure something is at your best preference. This term is one that I always knew existed, but didn’t apply it to my own work or to my own life. However, now that I know exactly where to apply it, I realize it doesn’t have to be only in education. It could be used in education, in one’s career and life says Sandra L. Giles. It’s interesting because I know exactly what it is, yet I never found the urge to actually apply it. Or if I did, I didn’t realize I was reflecting. Sandra L. Giles from her article ‘Reflective writing and the revision process: what were you thinking?” says “Reflection helps you to develop your intentions (purpose), figure out your relation to your audience, uncover possible problems…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic. I had passed the AP English exam my senior year which gave me more confidence heading into college but I knew that college would be a whole different ball game.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing. Because of a five paragraph paper I had to write in this class, I learned that writing is never as bad as I think it will be.…

Portfolio reviewers: My pre-ECU 2201 experience was my English 1100 course. While taking this class online, I learned how to make an interesting essay. Though this class didn 't require much research, it taught me how to write an interesting essay. Most of the time the professor gave us the decision to write whatever we wanted to write on. There might been some times where he wanted us to write a specific topic, but still had the chance to write whatever we wanted within the topic. Most papers were 4-7 pages, and because we had the choice to write what we desire, it became easy to get the required amount. Being most of our essay were made up there was no need for sources unless we used a similar story.…

When starting Writing 101 around 8 weeks ago, I came in with very little knowledge. The knowledge I did come in with was mainly from high school and Military administrative school. In high school you learn the basics of writing whereas in the Military administrative school you learn a different type of format altogether. I graduated high school in 2011 so I never really had to use APA or even basic writing format after my senior paper. In the Military, administrative school taught me the basics in Military writing, Navel Format, Standard Business Letter, and writing Orders. It is those military writing skills and knowledge that I use on a daily basis. Coming into Writing 101 I expected to relearn much of what I learned in high school…

Sitting in the broad room with the buttery afternoon sunlight alighting upon the bookshelves, a soft voice behind me asks me to think aloud as I work with a writing scenario. I was supposed to be interviewing her, but she has turned the tables on me to think on my feet to see how I would begin the very article I am writing now. She poses questions like: Where will I start? What is the purpose of the article? Who is my audience?…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well. By having me take familiar events, but write about them in a way I hadn’t done before caused me to have to think about them in a different light. Being able to analyze situations and data is one of the most important skills you can possess in life. It is a skill that can be developed and improved, and we have no reason not to. I now feel more confident in my ability to convey my positions on topics, and general writing ability as…
