My Counselor Philosophy

A mentor, advisor, helper, motivator, and educator, remain to be the first words that cross my mind when I think about the term counselor. As indicated in my first philosophy, a counselor should not be confused with an enabler. A counselor in college student affairs provides necessary tools for academic achievement, personal, social, emotional and career development. An enabler is one who encourages bad or self-destructive behavior in another. It is my goal and desire as a counselor to help students reach their fullest potential by creating a safe and comfortable environment that fosters success, creativity, individuality and promote academic, personal, emotional and social growth.

Furthermore, it is the goal of counseling to facilitate in the development of new or better coping skills. The following is a list of some general goals that apply to all students: setting goals, identifying a dream job or career, choosing a program or course of study that fits with their dream job or career, getting involved in extracurricular activities (e.g. Greek, athletic sports, student organizations, student government, work, service learning, volunteer, etc.) and having enough time to invest in at least two hours per week to study for each class, obtaining and maintaining a 3.5 G.P.A or higher, developing the necessary skills for success in their desired field (e.g. Time management, analytical thinking, problem-solving, etc.), graduating, and obtaining employment after graduation in their field of …show more content…
States student affairs professionals should avoid dual relationships with students where one individual serves in multiple roles that create conflicting responsibilities, role confusion, and unclear expectations that may involve incompatible roles and conflicting responsibilities. Therefore, I will avoid forming relationships of any kind with clients outside counseling. Most importantly, I need to be aware of client’s values. My personal values can influence clients ', consequently; I need to be aware of my attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. During my counseling session, my client started crying and I unconsciously told her not to cry. Saying "don 't cry" was the wrong thing to say because it is a direct statement that has influence on clients ' course of action. Another aspect I need to be aware of is culture.
