I’ve been studying psychology for three years now and I am still waiting for the day where I wake up feeling like I know more about the subject than I did the day before. As is typical for students of a field with such depth, my experience with psychology is that the more I learn the less I know. I hope that at some point I will feel like I have a decent grasp, my prospective career goals require it of me. I feel it would be appallingly irresponsible for me to do what I hope to without first acquiring a high level of expertise. I decided I needed to study psychology because of a small degree of guilt. I especially worry about the kids who has similar behavioral and environmental problems as I did, but won’t have the same opportunity I had to succeed despite it. You might be able guess at this point; I intend to become a school psychologist, and the more I investigate the prerequisite skills that the profession requires, the more I develop interest. I know that the school psychology graduate program here at Fresno State is competitive. I will need to find ways to stand out from the crowd. I am currently looking for volunteer opportunities that will put me in contact with young students. I am looking for school psychologists to shadow. I intend to spend the next two doing anything I can to prepare to apply for the program. The program is intense, and is only three years long. I will need to be prepared financially and personally for a busy schedule. Your rubric asks me to list possible career options, and a realistic ten-year plan. I don’t have potential career options; I have a singular career goal. It may be wise to have a plan-b, however, it is my belief that not having one keeps you committed and determined. For the same reason, I also do not have a ten-year plan to reach this goal, as it should not take me more than six. I’ve spent enough time being ‘realistic’, it is time for me to demand more from
