All throughout American schools from preschool to highschool there are students with special needs. According to the textbook “Education in a Pluralistic Society” students with disabilities are categorized with labels such as an individual with mental retardation, learning disabilities, speech impairment, visual impairment, hearing impairment, emotional disturbance, and physical and health impairments. Children with these disabilities have a lot to deal with in general. But when you add school into the equation, it can be a little more stressful. I noticed with one student in particular, the teacher had to keep helping and trying to keep the student on track. At the end, the student kept trying to figure out how he would remember the notes throughout the rest of the school day. The teacher then wrote down the notes of the instrument he was playing and told the student that he was allowed to come in anytime after school to practice. I later found out that the student had Asperger 's Syndrome. But the way the teacher handled the students exceptionalities was excellent. When carrying out the education of students with special needs, it is important to give them extra help just like the band teacher from Charlotte High School did. Another way to keep up with their education is to have good communication with the parents. By keeping contact with the parents, it will be a good way to get information on the student 's likes and dislikes. You can also find out what can calm the child down. Also by pairing them with other students will be beneficial as well. For instance, if a student has bad memory loss, a teacher can pair them up with another student to help them remember to write their homework down in their agenda. Especially when it comes to students with exceptionalities, it is important to pay attention to their progress. While observing at Charlotte High School, one of the classes I observed was a class filled with students who had learning disabilities. While observing, the teacher showed me the classes “Interaction books”. Each student had a composition notebook filled with where the class was and the progress of each student. I thought this was a good idea to keep track of each student and for them to know their own progress as well. During a class discussion in Introduction to Diversity, we talked about students with special needs and we also had a speaker come in. The speaker talked about children with Asperger 's Syndrome. She talked about how to keep up with a child with Aspergers. She also showed us a binder that helps with the child throughout school. I feel that this binder would help the student know where he or she stood in the class and would help the teacher as
