The Student Support Services Program has been my beacon of light that has guided me ever since the college journey commenced exactly eight months ago. As a first-generation student, I, and I know many other students, encounter hurdles and obstacles that often prevent us from success. Nonetheless, SSSP encourages me to strive and navigate through the college campus like a free and independent bird.
I think what I am most proud of belonging to the SSSP family is the people who are part of it. Everyone is so motivated to do well, to excel, to highlight, to contribute to the institution, either through their passion, leadership, and/or knowledge. I learned about the different resources that Brandeis offers its students, such as the writing center, BUGS tutors, also individual tutorial sessions to improve my English (ELP), the Hiatt Career Center, and the writing tutor that SSSP has for their students, among others. I have taken advantage of all these resources available to me and they have allowed me to successfully navigate through college. But it was because of SSSP who encouraged me to go and seek for help. I think students need to learn several distinct aspects aside from academics. There are countless of things that we, as students, worry about, and SSSP provides us with an important tool: informing us and guiding us wherever we must go. One example, I did not know what would it entail to renew my application for financial aid. However, I attended one of the SSSP’s events and they not only informed me about the process to renew financial aid. They also had experts about how to repay for college loans and saving tips, which I found helpful and valuable
