Striving for success is a part of a person's natural human instinct. In the past, growing was always the result of putting oneself outside of one's comfort zone. In fact, if people never tried anything new, today might look very different. Ralph Waldo Emerson's statement on growth makes the perception of achieving success very clear. Growing as a person is a result of expanding one's exposure to fields outside of his or her comfort zone, as seen through the very denotation of the word "expand," the power it provides that individual to expand already known knowledge into a more detailed, mastered form, and the increased ability of one's role in society. Even though it may be hard for some people to realize, one must sacrifice one's comforts in order to grow. However, the results of expanding one's knowledge is not limited to growing as a person. A person's expansion of his or her knowledge also increases his or her understanding of the world. For example, if one feels more comfortable with biology than anthropology, there is no reason to never study anthropology. Studying cultures is just as important as studying the science of life. Some say that two fields, such as anthropology and biology, never touch; however, without understanding some of the customs and rituals people have around the world, many biological accomplishments would not be in existence. How could one possibly study remote environments without first understanding the way the native people have adapted and weaved their culture into it? Understanding fields beyond those that are already mastered are key to the growth and cultivation of one's field of expertise.
