This is because happiness has intrinsic value and money has instrumental value. Think of instrumental value as a stepping stone toward something, and intrinsic value as that something you are stepping toward. Now, to continue our analogy, let’s think about one characteristic of stepping stones. Unless a particular stepping stone is the very last one before your destination, it will probably lead to another stepping stone. Likewise, things that have instrumental value usually lead to other things with instrumental value. The money will probably not directly buy you happiness. It will, say, buy you something that will let you do something to accomplish something, which will then give you satisfaction or happiness.
