Importance Of Spying In Hamlet

Improved Essays
In Act II of Hamlet, three characters chose to spy on others further developing them as a character and greatly influencing the plot. The first of these characters is Polonius who sends his servant Reynaldo off to Paris to look into the actions and conduct of Laertes over there. Polonius instructs Reynaldo to look for prominent Danes over there and question them to see if they know Laertes without making his close relationship with Laertes obvious. As a matter of fact, Polonius states that Reynaldo should “Just tell them you vaguely know Laertes, say something like, “I’m a friend of his father and I sort of know him,” or whatever. Do you get what I’m saying, Reynaldo?” (Shakespeare). Also, this part of the play emphasizes characteristics in …show more content…
Claudius summoned Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two of Hamlet’s friends from school, and requested that they both attempt to find out the reason for Hamlet’s recent actions and distemper. This is shown when Claudius states, “Since you both grew up with him and are so familiar with his personality and behavior, I’m asking you to stay a while at court and spend some time with him. See if you can get Hamlet to have some fun, and find out if there’s anything in particular that’s bothering him, so we can set about trying to fix it.” (Shakespeare). It can be inferred that Claudius might be requesting these two to act as a result of his own paranoia and worry that Hamlet has possibly discovered the fact that he poisoned his brother, the old king. This action taken by Claudius seems to further develop him as a character and give the audience insight into his worry about others finding out about the terrible actions he committed in order to usurp the throne. This action is very important to the plot as it impacts the information that Claudius finds out about Hamlet who is working to avenge his father. However, it also leads to suspicions in Hamlet as he wonders why two of his school friends have come all this way, not believing that they traveled such a distance just to visit

This idea is presented throughout William Shakespeare's Hamlet as the characters use their ears and what they hear to eavesdrop and expose others. False rumors are often spread and people are punished for listening to conversations that they should not be listening to. Many characters find themselves listening to private conversations, which unfold personal information. Prior to Laertes departure for France, Polonius emphasizes the importance of not trusting everyone that he encounters, he says, ¨give every man thy ear, but few thy voice¨ (1.3.74). In the Western Canon, the body of books, music, and art that are generally accepted as the most influential and important works that shaped Western culture, there are two distinct literary genres: comedy, and tragedy. The characteristics of tragedy as defined by Aristotle are evident in Hamlet by William Shakespeare: pity and fear is evoked by the main character, the main character possesses a tragic flaw (indecision), and is usually a member of the nobility. In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Tom Stoppard is relying on the audience already having a general knowledge of Hamlet, and transforms the classic Aristotelian tragedy into a comedy by creating lead characters who have no moral struggles, and are superficial, ordinary men. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is obviously very different from Hamlet. Hamlet is dark and moody, but Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is absurd.…

Some players came into town and Hamlet tells them to put on a show just how Hamlet’s father explained to him how he was killed. If Claudius looks uncomfortable or leaves, there is no doubt that he is guilty of killing the king. Hamlets anxiousness about his father’s death is major factor that drove him insane. Critic Berry said, “At the moment when it became intolerable Claudius and Hamlet both started from their seats and met in the central ‘spot’, to glare at each other, nose to nose, over the body of ‘Gonzaga’ before Claudius made his distracted exit down the central aisle” (Barry 358). This quote shows the tension between Hamlet and Claudius.…

Claudius begins using spying to his advantage early on when he calls for Guildenstern and Rosencrantz to come find the source of Hamlet’s madness. Claudius asks Guildenstern and Rosencrantz “To draw him on to pleasures and to gather, So much as from occasion you may glean, Whether aught, to us unknown, afflicts him thus That, opened, lies within our remedy.(2.2.15-19)”. This example of spying shows how the King is uncertain of what is causing Hamlet’s madness and how he is concerned that Hamlet knows something he shouldn’t. At this point in the Play Claudius wants to know why Hamlet is still upset over his father 's death or if he is mad for other reasons. The King assumed that Hamlet would not suspect anything out of the ordinary when Guildenstern and Rosencrantz came to visit out of the blue, however, Hamlet was almost instantly suspicious.…

If Claudius never existed there would be no Hamlet. King Hamlet would have probably died of natural causes or something else and when he died, Hamlet would just take the throne without any problem. Claudius set up the whole play from the moment he poured the poison down King Hamlet’s ear. With the crown as his goal he tells the public that his “dear brother” died after being bitten by a snake, and proceeds to take Elsinore and Gertrude. After the ghost of King Hamlet tells Hamlet that, “that incestuous, that adulterate beast, with witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts….won to his shameful lust the will of my most seeming-virtuous queen.”, that is what starts the plot as Hamlet is now filled with anger and revenge as he says, “It is 'Adieu, adieu!…
