I aspire to go to medical school and become a cardiologist, so the ability to speak more than one language, especially a language that many people speak, would put me at an advantage in the healthcare field. Our world is an extremely diverse place consisting of people who speak various languages and have different customs, etc. To keep up with the pace of the exceeding diversity of our world, we need to learn a new language. As Rita Mae Brown has once said, "Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going." I believe that learning Spanish will help me understand and treat my patients effectively, especially Hispanic patients when I become a doctor. I would not need to use a translator to translate what my Spanish-speaking patient is saying. I can make a personal connection with the patient and make him/her feel confident about my capacity to give medical advice. I would also know how to address the patient properly so that I don 't offend or disrespect the patient. For instance, if I learn to speak Spanish fluently, then I would know that I should never address my patient by saying "tu," but rather address the patient formally: "usted." Conversing in Spanish with my Hispanic patients would help me form an emotional bond with them and will let the patients know that I understand the pain they are suffering with.
Obtaining a minor in Spanish will definitely help me become more tolerant and accepting of different cultures. It will make me more sensitive to cultural differences. It will also educate me about what would be considered respectful and disrespectful in Spanish-speaking societies so that I won 't offend or hurt another person 's
