Math Lesson Observation

This week I watched children in the class solve a word problem on the board. I decide that I wanted to observe the students in Math and make a checklist to assess their understanding of the concept skill presented. The students were suppose to master the skill of solving a word problem with pictures and then when they were done, they were to participant in a class discussion on how to solve the problem. With that being said, I decided to compose a checklist to see if students understood how to solve the word problem by observing their communication skills during the class discussion. I was looking to see if the students had the ability to read the problem, understand the problem by knowing which mathematical strategy to use to solve the problem, along with possessing the ability to label the parts of the equation. I also wanted to see if the student could solve the problem and provide the correct answer to the problem.
Once I came up with the criteria being observed I used a scoring rubric to

The student was able to read, apply the information from the word problem to an equation. She was also able to label some of the parts of the equation. She said the numbers being multiplied are the factors and the sum was the answer instead of saying that the answer was a product. Jigglypuff was able to clearly explain her thought process behind solving the multiplication problem but she incorrectly solved the problem. She said she used an array to help her solve the problem, which explained to me who she was 1 number off from the correct answer. The student came up with 25 instead of 24 because she miscounted the number of “X’s” in her array. I feel that the student seemed to partially understand the concept and needs some extra attention on labeling the parts of the multiplication problem along with learning to double count to avoid basic mathematical

Our client does understand that subtraction is taking a certain numerical value from another numerical value. Our client has troubles identifying when she needs to do subtraction or addition in word problems; she will do addition unless told specifically that she needs to do subtraction (as shown in question 1). She cannot tell which operation she needs to use in certain problems; A problem on the assessment read “Write a subtraction sentence that matches with the addition: (6 + 8 = 14). As a whole, the class average was around 60% percent, meaning the class is on the developing or adequate level of understanding the learning objective. A quarter of the class passed the assessment with 85 or better, which is considered a mastery under the math curriculum followed. Half the class scored a 65 or less. This shows that these students have a minimal to no understanding of the concept being taught. 8 out of the sixteen students understood procedurally and conceptually how to compare to objects with a third object.…

On September 17, I observed first grade, Elkhorn City Elementary teacher, Dana Sheets. These rambunctious students had just came back from lunch and were still phasing to settling down for their lesson. The teacher did a wonderful job of catching their attention through the transition of calming them. She had the students complete a word puzzle on the wall out of their spelling words. She had made the boards setup on the wall so that each student can just run up and connect a puzzle piece, in which case is one letter to help spell the word out, the next student would follow behind, completing another word and eventually they would have the word spelled out.…

In this process, the student first solves the problem and verbalizes the processes used, then writes he step-by-step process and identifies it on the model.” (Miles and Forchs, p. 6). While the teacher is helping the student along, he or she can monitor what areas the student might be struggling with. If the teacher is instructing a large classroom, this strategy might be better done in small groups. There is considerable evidence to indicate a that verbalizing upper level math problems has a pos6itive impact.…

Today, many adults view word problems as the least favorite aspect of math problems; however, that may all change in the future due to today’s students receiving thorough instruction on word problems through the use of teachers using the Common Core Initiative. In order for students to appreciate word problems they must first understand what the problem is asking them solve and they must also understand the information that the word problem has given them. The eight mathematical practices teach students to understand math problems and to analyze the problems. The first step in helping students with math is to show them how to think mathematically.…

I have loved every moment spent at my site these past 8 weeks and look forward to the weeks ahead. I am observing at the first Pre-K in the district that I graduated from. The school and classroom is very welcoming, I have enjoyed getting to know all 16 of the children, seeing their shyness slip away and their personalities come out. Being able to be apart of the children’s day once a week has taught me so much about how a public school is ran and especially the Pre-K. The teacher and Ed tech have shared so much insightful information with me about classrooms and working with 4 and 5 year olds.…

INTASC Standards: 8, 9 Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).” As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.…

If she chose to give her students a paper and pencil, multiple choice quiz or pretest, she would be assessing a lower order thinking skill, such as “remember”. If there were short answer questions she may be assessing the “understand”, or “apply” components, but would probably not assess the highest order thinking skills. However, Mrs. Jenkins could easily take this lesson and/or quiz to the next level using technology, or more specifically, something called “Kahoot!”.
