How To Absorb Solar Energy

A solar panel is deigned to absorb light energy from the sun. From there, the energy is converted into an electrical current and can produce electricity or heat. As promising as solar energy is, are solar panels an efficient means of producing electricity and does solar energy benefit the greater population? To understand the efficiency of a solar panel, there is essential information on solar energy, that once understood, helps to answer whether solar panels are energy efficient. First, what is it that encompasses a solar panel? Solar panels are made up of solar cells. A solar cell is a small portion of a semiconductor, which is made to reflect as little light as possible. Depending on the material used to make the solar cell, the overall …show more content…
Topaz Solar Farm is successful because it is located in the right region, however, not every region is exposed to this amount of sunlight. Areas in the Earth’s upper northern hemisphere, such as the Scandinavian countries, experience polar nights, which would cause solar panels to stop generating any electricity during this time period. Furthermore, some locations may not receive much sunlight due to the environment. For example, the Pacific Northwest’s weather patterns are typically overcast and even when sunny, the time from morning to early afternoon is still cloudy. However, while these areas may not receive solar energy for large periods of time this does not render solar panels useless to these regions. Solar panels are still efficient due to the batteries which store electricity for when there is little or no …show more content…
The primary function of a battery is to store energy generated during sunny periods. This then allows a regular power supply to support a portion of the energy needs of a building. However, solar panels use batteries that are slightly different from the average battery. Deep cycle batteries are capable of all the above functions like storing energy, but they are still unique from other batteries, like a car battery. With a car battery the energy that is stored is released all at once to get the engine going and then receives a massive recharge. Deep cycle batteries, on the other hand, release and recharge at a much slower pace. For example, a deep cycle battery could use 30% of the energy it’s stored and then will wait for additional energy to be collected by the solar panel. Currently, the two most commonly used batteries for a solar panel system are flooded lead-acid (FLA) deep cycle batteries and sealed deep cycle

CONVERSION OF SOLAR ENERGY FOR USE Producing solar power is just as simple as using the sunlight that heats the surface of the earth. Now, more than ever, it has become an important alternate energy source. It can be used in two different ways, as a heating source and as an energy source. It can generate heat, lighting and electricity. Understanding how this important energy source is produced is just the beginning.…

I think solar energy would be the most effective energy for the United States to develop. The energy cost has dropped because the technology improved. Although some still argue that solar energy is costly, it is beneficial to the environment because it is efficient, it will not give off harmful gases, and it is easily accessible. Solar energy is powered by sunlight, which converts it into solar heating and electricity. There are two types of solar heating systems, active and passive power; solar energy uses this to make electricity.…

Solar energy is renewable source, which means we can never run out of the sunshine. Due to which, utilizing energy from the natural renewable sources like the sun, dependence on sources such as oil and coal that are harmful to environment can be decreased. As shown in figure 2, the solar energy is a renewable energy source. Although, energy that is produced from other sources like coal and natural gas are expensive as well as they are not renewable. Moreover, people have been able to capture some of the sun’s energy that falls to earth and convert it into usable power for a variety of practical uses such as for cooking, heating, and to power everyday appliances.…

This hybrid system can be on grid or off grid but for more saving, off grid system is preferred. (Department of Energy). According to Khare (2016), the way this system works is following: First the solar and wind energy converts into AC current than it is converted into DC and charged DC battery. Then from that battery electricity is distributed through the house. If the system is connected to grid, after usage rest of the electricity will be going to the grid (p.24).…

People have been debating on the environmental benefits on solar panels because there is some pollution involved. Solar energy does not produce any pollution directly like burning coal or other fossil fuels does. However, the panels themselves use some hazardous materials. According to Maehlum “Some manufacturing processes are associated with greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen trifluoride and sulfur hexafluoride has been traced back to the production of solar panels.” (Maehlum 1).…
