In our technologically integrated society today, social media has become a fundamentally effective tool for communication between colleagues, friends, and family. Almost everyone uses some form of social media to foster personal exchange with their peers, including health care professionals. A common example of social media are websites, primarily: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. From posting health safety notices to explaining drug recall information to answering emergency questions, nurses can provide quick responses and critical assistance to the public (“Everynurse,” 2014). Blogs, Real Simple Syndication Feed (RSS), and discussion forums can help nurses stay in contact with each other for support during stressful times in the workplace or to answer questions regarding nursing education. In addition to these social network resources, YouTube has become an excellent database for medical education. Individuals can post lectures and skills videos that facilitate visual/audio learning. LinkedIn is another useful social media tool for getting professional achievements noticed by potential employers.
