Even till this day, social class affects individual life chances. Social class plays a substantial role in parts of our life including health, education, employment and even politics. But before we can understand how social class influences our life chances, we need to grasp what social class is and how it all started. A social class is a large group of people of similar status, sharing corresponding levels of power, wealth and position. Social classes describe one form of social stratification, people who hold the same layer of the socioeconomic ranking.

Weber argued that property could also bring prestige, since people are likely to hold wealthy people in high value. He concluded that owning property, such as factories or equipment, is only part of what determines a person’s social class. Nonetheless, people who run corporations without owning them still benefit from production and profits. For Weber, wealth and prestige are associated together.
