In social work profession, there are six methods divided into primary and secondary methods. One of the secondary methods of Social work is SOCIAL ACTION. This method brings about betterment in structure of the society and also helps in preventing negative changes which may happen. Thus, Social Action as a method of social work is a very significant method and due importance should be given to it.

Despite of such issues; it is regarded as important method. As a method which are usually the techniques enabling the people for better functioning, Social Action helps in bringing long term changes in several institutions working in society. Various movements like political, economic and religious reforms, freedom, liberties of various kinds can be tackled by social action.
Action is human behavior which can be overt, subjective and inward. It becomes social when the behavior of others is taken into account. Social Action become RATIONAL when best means is used to achieve the end and it becomes INSTRUMENTAL when it is related to something’s function as a mean to the end (WEBER)
Mary Richmond was the first social worker to use social action as a method in social work in 1922.She defines social action as “mass betterment through propaganda and social legislation”- (RICHMOND,1922).There are several stages of social action-

It helps to cater to injustices faced by poor sections of the country. The oppressed section of the society is always ignored and their demands are neglected. It is this critical social work which sees the problems of such people from a critical eye and adheres to them. Critical theories seek to the study of oppression faced by people from various stratum of society.
Like many other theories of social work, critical social work has also been taken from various disciplines of humanities and science.Thus, the contribution of critical social work is as important as other theories as it helps in bringing about those issues in forefront of people who have been ignored.
Critical social work as social action helps in going to the root cause of the problems faced by and in the society.Usually, many theories cannot be applied into practice but critical social work and social action both give emphasis on issues of everyday life of people and oppression of the elite class on other population can be checked upon.
