Setting is important to the beginning of “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it helped to set the mood. Anne and her family went into hiding in a small and hidden apartment, quickly after Hitler began to take over. “It is the top floor of a warehouse and office building in Amsterdam, Holland. The sharply peaked roof of the building is outlined against a sea of other rooftops,stretching away into the distance.”(Goodrich and Hackett) This quote gives a surrounding view of the the apartment, hidden away in the top of Mr.Frank’s factory. Around three years after this devastating event Mr.Frank returns to the apartment, after the lost of his wife and two daughters. “The rooms are dusty, the curtains, in rags.
