Why is service important to you and how has your service impacted your community?

By enriching the lives of people from all walks of life through service, I have had the opportunity to chronicle the human experience in a captivating way and have benefitted positively from doing so. During my two-year term as a National Honor Society officer, I raised money to support Gabriela, a fifth grader from Honduras to attend school for a year through Unbound. In September, I received correspondence from her.
"My biggest objective is to be a nurse," she wrote. “That is why I give the best of me to keep moving forward."

Gabriela reminded me that service is a driving force of positive change within a community. Her words stood as a symbolic reminder of the impact of every canned food drive I had organized and every Saturday morning I spent in homeless shelters. Every time I lifted my voice

How have your values been shaped by your communities?

I grew up listening to stories about a malnourished boy with seven siblings who loved to dance. He twirled about with only a thatch roof above his head. I grew up listening to stories about a quiet girl locked into the rigidity of a military family.
Tales of land with a flag of green and white, where the future seemed dim due to a lack of electricity and a corruption-laden government. Then, the story would turn to America: the land of opportunity.

Being surrounded by the Nigerian community within Fairfield has instilled important values into me, and developed me into the person I am today. My parents’ stories stress the importance of perseverance, as they arrived here without food in their stomachs and an aching hunger for opportunity.
