Importance of Self Care Self- care can be defined as the way a person takes care of his or his physical, emotional and mental health. Each individual has different approach to self-care. I consider healthy living as proper self-care. What one would consider important factor to self-care would not be as important to someone else. Nursing school can be very stressful therefore self-care is important attribute to living healthy whiles I am in school and through my nursing career. The ability to function properly depends on how good I take care of myself. I will be discussing three approaches to self-care how I can implement them, and how relevant it is for society. Back in Ghana electricity shortage is a problem and due to that we do not store food in fridge as much we do with drinks because it will go bad when the lights go off. Females are expected to cook at least twice a day mostly breakfast and dinner. Usually we eat from outside source for lunch. There is no fast food in Ghana I did not know what a burger is till I got here in the United States. Naturally I am big bone person just like most Ghanaians females. Weight loss has always been important to me but at the same I am careful not to make a top priority. At some point in my life sophomore year in college I stop eating and thought getting skinny will make look prettier and the outcome was not pretty. In the midst of school stress and earing healthy is my top priority. Food plays an important part in healthy lifestyle because eating healthy decreases the chances of getting sick. As part of eating healthy I try as much to eliminate soda form my diet. We do not serve soda in my home. Recent study was conducted find relation between eating habit and childhood obesity (Lanigan, 2010). Childhood obesity cause psychosocial risk such as asthmas, sleep apnea, type II diabetes, social rejection and low self-esteem. Personal hygiene is important to our daily lives. We can practice personal hygiene through many ways such as bathing, hand washing, haircut, nail grooming, brushing of teeth, etc. to help prevent spread of germs and diseases. There is a saying in my local dialect that as a person appears so is his or her home. As a child I was required to brush my teeth twice before and after bed. In the United States I am not required to sweep my compound but aback in Ghana sweeping and mopping the house each morning was a requirement. I hated it so much but as an adult it has helped shaped me. I like to put things in order in my environment. I do not feel comfortable in a dirty environment. In developing countries like Ghana malaria and cholera is very common therefore keeping the environment clean is important to your health. My mother used to say a good woman is the one with no flies in her house. Taking shower twice a day is also a habit I developed as a child. Taking good care of yourself include good smell. Recently in health assessment we have been taught that a patient with bad body odor gives indication of their mental status. In primary school we used to tease those with bad body odor as matter of fact it despised us to have body odor. I did not have access to perfume so I used to apply lime before shower each night and took away any smell from sweat I still do it sometimes. is important to my self-care because
