The Oxford dictionary states that self-awareness is the “conscious knowledge of one’s own character and feelings” and it is the necessity of this quality within team formation and development that I will evaluate throughout this essay. I aim to review the techniques by which we may become self-aware and review their connection to team development…
Before we can discuss the importance of self-awareness we first have to look into how we can achieve this knowledge. It is said that self-awareness can be realised by completing a series of tests based on theoretical models. One of these models was created by Honey and Mumford (1982); they identified four learning styles or preferences:

It was said that holists are global learners who perceive information as a whole, they are able to see relationships between concepts and application. They can gather information randomly within a framework but neglect the fine detail. Serialists approach problem-solving step-wise, proceeding from the known to the unknown. They like to acquire rules, methods and details but do not understand how they fit together.
The most widely known learning style model within education would be The VAK Learning Styles Model. This was developed by Walter Barbe (1979) and according to this model; most of us prefer to learn in one of three ways:
• Visual: a visually-dominant learner absorbs and retains information better when it is presented in, for example, pictures, diagrams and charts.
• Auditory: an auditory-dominant learner prefers listening to what is being presented. He or she re-sponds best to voices, for example, in a lecture or group discussion. Hearing his own voice repeating something back to a tutor or trainer is also

The model consists of three core management responsibilities:
• achieving the task – identify aims and resources, plan to achieve the task, establish responsibilities, set standards, review and re-assess targets
• managing the team or group - establish and communicate standards, establish style, monitor and maintain discipline, develop team-working, identify and meet group training needs
• managing individuals - understand the team members as individuals, assist and support individuals, agree individual responsibilities, give recognition, train and develop individual team
