1.0 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING
Science and Engineering can be a regarded as an inseparable concept to which modern engineering depends. Engineering was first practiced from man’s mental capacity that fashioned him into recognizing tools and natural resources around him and developing on that for his own benefit. Take for example “the prehistoric man” where discoveries were made of tools used, knowledge of fire depicted by drawings in caves, all without the understanding of science and its role in the physical world. As time passed the knowledge of Science and its role became real. Hence, we study the role of Science in Engineering.

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has identified some of the Engineering achievements of the nineteenth and twentieth century:
Electrification- People were dependent on fire as a source of light which had limited intensity, it also posed a threat to property as house fires were frequent. Light produced by electricity has greater intensity and engineered designs to protect from electrical overload and other safety measures.
Mobility- In 1920 automobiles were mass-produced. Automobiles are credited to reducing limitations in geography and increasing incomes and wealth. Airplanes also freed people from geographical constraints by making rapid long- distance travel possible and advancing a global economy.
Water Purification- Purified water has a significant impact on human life, where its presence improved health. In the 1800’s and 1900’s water borne diseases like cholera and typhus were extensive because of the lack of clean …show more content…
More importantly they determine problems that may arise in the future and work to resolve issues with possible solutions so that life can perpetuate in a more advanced and safe manner.
Consider natural catastrophes that are continuously affecting people like hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis which account for mass deaths. Although not in most recent times but volcanic eruptions and meteorites impacted the earth as well. Engineers are currently working to protect people and property from these natural occurrences and improve on the detection and response.
Mankind is also threatened by diseases, consider the AIDS epidemic and the Zika virus where concern lies with microcephaly in new born babies. There are also other diseases that may arise in the future. Hence, biomedical engineers will have to work swiftly in combating these medical threats together with scientists and governments to develop and implement technologies. (Wikibook, 2015)
Another aspect is the need for energy resources and with energy almost completely reliant on Fossil Fuels, which is a non-renewable resource that contributes to global warming and pollution, engineers are targeting Electrical energy and other energy
