James Dillingham Young, a present for Christmas. But as her luck may have it, all she had to use to purchase the present was one dollar and eighty-seven cents. Della knew she would need more money in order to get Jim a gift that was ‘something fine and rare and sterling’. It was then that Della came to realize what she might have to do in order to get a little bit of more money. At this point in the short story, Della thought it would be a good idea to sell her hair to get the money she would need for Jim’s gift. Mrs. James Dillingham Young then went out into town to sell her hair at a place with a sign that read “Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds”. Where she then proceeded to follow through with her plan and had her hair cut and sold for twenty dollars. She then ransacked all the local stores until she found the perfect gift. When she arrived home with the gift in hand, she continued to wonder and hope that Jim would like his gift and that he wouldn’t be upset with her for doing what she did to herself. By this time Della had realized that although her hair may take time to grow back, she still had sacrificed one of the only two treasured possessions between them both to buy an accessory for the other treasure, Jim’s gold watch that was passed on from his grandfather, to his father, to him. Once Jim had returned home, he took a look at his wife and felt started. Not

This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. The best society is one in which every member is driven to lift an equal part, and no one is left with too little or too much of the weight. This arises as a result of the existence of people who give to, but do not receive from the common good. Contrary to how they function in these books, societies are most successful when everyone consciously and genuinely sacrifices for the common good, and receives reasonable and just compensation for their deed.…

In “Lather or Nothing Else” and “The Gift of the Magi,” Tellez and O’Henry use symbols to express a deeper significance. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers.
