If the factors are known various transportation companies can make changes to their vehicles or their routes so as to reduce the chance of accidents and increase their profits. This will allow the transportation companies to form plans regarding the best way they can earn profit and minimize the risk.
This better transportation system will further help companies in sector such as agriculture who are highly dependent on transportation facilities for their proper functioning.
Need for research
The area of road safety lack the proper implementation as the government is just formulating policies and no changes are done to improve the policies. The main reason for this is the lack of information with the government. They do not specifically know what factor causes these events to happen. If and only when the factors are known correctly then only the correct measures can be taken to reduce the number of road accidents.
Data, Variables & Techniques Used
Data that was required for the study was supposed to be from India but as in India there is no proper system so as to record data about road accident and also no effort is taken to do that, the data of accidents of Great Britain had to be used. The data contains accident information from England ,Scotland and …show more content…
The data is collected from STAT11 forms that are required to be filled whenever an accident takes place. The data is available from year 1978 to year 2013, but because of the limited capability of our system and the large size of data we have taken only for the year 2013. The data contains information about the casualties ,the road and weather conditions and vehicles involved in the accidents. We have only considered data about the road and weather conditions ignoring the vehicle data and the data about the human factors as our research aims to identify the road factors that affect the severity of these accidents. We have also taken into consideration the location of accidents in order to better identify the effect of these accidents.
The Variables involved in the study are:
Accident Index: It is the reference id attached to each accident in order to uniquely identify it
Police Force: The police force under whose jurisdiction accident location falls
Accident Severity: It represents the fatality of each accident with 1 signifying fatal , 2 signifying serious , 3 signifying slight
Number of Vehicles: Vehicles involved in the crash
Number of Casualties: Casualties from the
