Reflecting on my progress as an English student, as well as a writer I have come to understand that refining my skills in the English arts relies heavily on my previous written works and the lessons I have learned from them, as well from my professors whom strive to shape and mold me into a better author and academic writer. That is why when accepting critique and suggestions I respond with the sincerest of humility. Throughout high school I am first to admit writing essays and analyzing rhetoric often presented itself as a difficult task for me. As a high school student who participated heavily in the Nation speech and debate Association, I was trained to use data to present an argument that was already clear to the reader, throughout high …show more content…
Second I struggled with upholding the parameters of the assignment specific to the essay’s, without sounding dull and risking in depth rhetoric. Essay One; A Rhetorical Analysis I was anxious while also weary of writing my first essay for my first semester in college, although I had written a Rhetorical Analysis prior to attending UHD I understood there was a high expectation of me and my writing skills. While preparing to write the rhetorical analysis Dr. Smith’s lectures helped me understand the purpose of a rhetorical analysis and …show more content…
While writing this type of essay Dr. Smith explained the purpose of the essay was to explain how a cause can have various effects. The textbook “Everything is an Argument” further explains this as cause A leads to effects B, C, & D. while writing this type of essay I was face with two challenges, first was what type of argument to present and how to organize the essay so that it makes sense as a whole, second I wanted to incorporate an interview to further support my claim, however I feared the interview might affect the tone of the essay resulting in a weak argument. I addressed these issues by constantly forming and outline of the essay, many of my peers noticed the descriptive tone of the essay however they advised to limit my own argument and input and have a neutral tone (something Dr. Smith noticed as well) while writing the causal analysis I found it hard to maintain a neutral tone being that I had a close connection to the topic of refugee migration and discrimination to refugees in the US. While incorporating the interview into the essay I noticed that my own thoughts where being forced upon the reader (a struggle I had in the rhetorical analysis) and to maintain the integrity of a causal analysis I had to constantly revise with others my work. In some cases, I had to rewrite and reorganized how the essay would present a cause

Prewriting was the next step in the rhetorical analysis process that prepared me for the structure of the essay that would follow. Outlining had always been something I would skip when it came to writing essays; although after reading about the importance of prewriting and finding that thesis and topic sentences were priority on drafting worksheets, I reconsidered. On the prewriting step of Henry and Little, I started by narrowing down my options for strategies and rhetorical devices to use as supporting evidence (Appendix D). From both Henry and Little’s speeches, I found a strong strategy used by the two was the rhetoric of their tone; therefore I decided through the prewriting process to compare their development of tone through their uses…

In my Exploratory Essay, my instructor said to “follow a quote with some commentary explaining why it is relevant”. I was able to do so by incorporating my own thoughts on the quote and how it connected to the points made in the essay. In my first essay, the Rhetorical Analysis essay, I received feedback from my instructor stating “your paper is not clearly organized”. In the last essay, the Researched Position essay, I received similar feedback on my draft stating “you will need to work on organization”. Usually, one would correct a common error, but I was unable to do so throughout my essay’s.…

I have been stressing out for many hours brainstorming and outlining my paper. Indeed, conducting a good thesis that consider both arguments from the materials and supporting it with quality evidences and details are not as simple as I thought. My first assignment is a summary and response essay from the article “College Prepare People for Life” by Freeman Hrabowski. At the moment, I struggled addressing a good thesis taking the sided arguments but still aiming the purpose of informing the message of the article. For my thesis statement, I wrote “ Colleges are needed for students to achieve their goals, search for good jobs, and more importantly, prepare them for life; but without knowing basic but necessary information about it, you are somewhat wasting your time.” It was a long thesis but did not concisely point out the intention of the author since I falsely included my own opinion into it.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…
