Reasons for Seeking a Counseling Degree

Our society is ashamed or embarrassed to speak about mental illness, until something tragic happens. It should be something we all embrace and focus on finding new ways to help. People with mental illnesses feel isolated, since mental illness is so taboo. Many celebrities’ deaths have changed our views on mental illness. We really need to find ways to help treat these individuals and society.
The final reason for choosing a counseling degree is to help my husband and son. As with anything in life, there is a driving force behind your actions – for me that is my husband and son. My husband has major anxiety and depression. My son is on the autism spectrum. I want to learn as much as possible to be able to help them work through their problems and be successful in their lives. A therapist would demonstrate interpersonal skills by being compassionate and empathetic to the client. This involves truly understanding where the client is coming from. A therapist should be warm and approachable in their demeanor. In a counseling session, communication is essential. Counselors have a good combination of listening and verbal communication to demonstrate active participation with the client. A therapist engaging in the conversation will sit; this entails facing the client, sitting close, and actively participating in conversation whether it be verbal or nonverbal. Verbal communication with the client would portray competence and knowledge of what you are trying to convey. It requires the ability to process information quickly and apply it to the
