Importance Of Pursuing A Career In Pharmacy

Improved Essays
Pursuing a career in pharmacy derives deeply from my self-interest in studying pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and to serve as a bridge for underrepresented Hmong communities. According to the 2010 US Census there are roughly 260,073 Hmong descent living in the United States. Many of these Hmong individual are war veterans or refugees elder who still rely deeply on eastern traditional medicine due to language barriers and lack of knowledge on western medicine. Many traditional eastern medicines are symptomatic and never cure the illness. Being a pharmacist and serving as a bridge for the Hmong community can help educate the elders of better alternative drugs and bypass the language barrier.

In addition to being a full time pre-pharmacy major during my time at Metropolitan State University, I also worked about 20 to 30 hours per week as a International Admission Lead were I am in charge of work flow and admitting international student to the university. I was able to be a member of TRIO and Upward Bound, which are programs that assist low-income students. Moreover, I am also a partaker in the International Student Organization and Asian Student Organization. One of the first challenges I encounter as a student at Metropolitan State University is adapting to the nontraditional long lecture hours per setting at the University. Overcoming the challenges required much of me to develop strict independent study skills out of class time. In the fall of 2011 through spring of 2012, I volunteered to take on the leadership role as vice president and secretary of the Asian Student Organization. Under my leadership, my colleagues and I were able to host multiple events till the start of the new fiscal year, which consequently affected my academic performance that year. The subsequent years I reduced much of my extracurricular work to better my performance, which worked. I acquired wise decisions making and cultivated better time management as well as limiting the amount of undertakings that will hamper my goals. I prolonged my graduation for a year purposely for taking additional upper-level division courses to shape up a solid completion. From the extension, I got the opportunity to conduct research to make certain that I am self-reliant capable of working and utilizing my creative knowledge. I finished my Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry and an independent year of research in organic synthesis and extractions in Spring of

I started my exploration process by thinking about the possible career opportunities that I may want to pursue in the future. The three careers I decided on were a pharmacologist, a veterinary technician, and a medical scientist. I used BLS.gov, Monster.com, and Google to find out the pros and cons of each career choice. Using BLS.gov, the website for the The Bureau of Labor Statistics I learned that the average wage for pharmacists in Virginia is $125,500, that they have a projected 3% growth in jobs in the next decade, and that I would need a doctorate or professional degree to become one. Medical scientists in Virginia have an average wage of $82,240, a projected 8% growth in jobs in the next decade, and also need a doctorate or professional…
