Personal Narrative: My Current Zone Of Proximal Development

Improved Essays
Following the Krathwohl and Developmental Assessment (Griffin, 2014), I believe my current Zone of Proximal Development should be at the “Organizing” stage. At the start of the semester, I identified my ZDP the stage as “Responding”, as I was willing to passively receive information and attended all the learning environment, and while completing assessments following the formal requirements, I was not always engaged in discussion in the tutorials. Luckily, the natural of the very first assignment, the group constructed rubric, had greatly helped me to overcome the “participates in discussions” item of the “Responding” level. Throughout several active group discussions, we cooperatively finished the task, and I developed the confidence to participation …show more content…
I started to build a link between the assessment and learning process as I construct my own rubric for the second assessment, since I am really applying the theories and methods learnt in class into practice. As I was given the chance to develop my own assessment task during my placement this semester, I was able to use the activity and it’s rubric I’ve constructed in practice, and I was very thankful for the opportunities. I had two classes of different levels during placement, and my original rubric was not adequate for the both levels, so I ended up having to reconstruct my rubric to meet the actual learning needs and ZPDs of my students. This process had really helped me developed “a problem-solving attitude to issues in developmental assessment” and “demonstrates a commitment to assessment practice improvement”. The use of Guttman chart was a new idea for my placement school, and even though I did not get to do developmental activities with the students using the result of the Guttman chart, my mentor teachers displayed strong interest in the system and said that they will try to adopt the Guttman result in their future lesson planning with the students, which I believed to be a very positive result. Throughout this I have helped my mentor teachers to understand the Guttman system, and have also tried to helped my fellow teacher candidates when any …show more content…
Actions I have selected from their suggestions for my professional learning plan are: diary writing, analysis of teaching practice, and self-scaffolding.
Firstly, I believe diary writing will help me to demonstrate self-reliance as it is a practice that requires me to work independently and analysis and reflect upon my own teaching practice. Diary writing and analysis of teaching practice are in a way align with other, as the purpose of the diary is to provide teachers a resource to analysis their own teaching. I also believe that such self-reflection is essential for me to further develop my future professional development plan.
Moreover, self-scaffolding, which by Fani and Ghaemi’s (2011) definition, means the scaffolding teachers can receive by engaging in literatures and textbooks. As I plan to continue my master study, there for sure will be a lot of chances for me to engage in high-quality literatures to improve my teaching practice. Since the mater classes are not learning area specific, I plan to study materials and papers relating to my two learning areas as well. I believe this practice will help me with both of the items that I plan to

I rise to the top of many of my classes although I am usually the youngest. Getting to where I am today was not easy. Appalachia Kentucky has a long history of poverty, gender inequalities, and stereotypes; this makes getting an education and having a bright future hard for a teenage girl who lives in the small town of Frenchburg.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family. Though my sisters and I didn’t wake up smiling and ready to work, in the long run chores prepared us for the day we needed to maintain an organized lifestyle and living space of…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Growth is a product of change, and change is inevitable regardless if it is positive or negative, which can be intimidating. During my adolescence, a fear resided in me because of my life’s adversities. I was raised in a low-income single mother household with an absent father due to incarceration. Despite feeling like a statistic, prospects began to arise when I joined the Midnight Golf Program(MGP). With the mentor-ship of MGP, I gained both courage and confidence in myself. It took courage for me to embrace my newfound mindset because not everyone in my community thought the same, but I was destined to be the rose…

Diary is an activity that refers to share what the writer think, feel, and express idea. It means that they write what they want. Mahadzir (2006, p.13) However, applying this activity in teaching depends on the consideration of the question(s) that one seeks to answer. In addition, the diary entries would offer teachers the insights of how learners make use of their unique experience to master the language. (Reis 1994, as cited in Mahadzir, 2006, p.6). The fundamental benefit of diary methods is that they permit the examination of reported events and experiences in their natural, spontaneous context, providing information complementary to that obtainable through traditional designs.…

Additionally, I assisted my mentor teacher to mark the students’ tests. These assessments let me know that whether my teaching strategies were suitable for enhancing the students learning, and what I needed to do next to support the improvement of students learning. Moreover, these assessments helped me to identify the students’ capability such as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) of the students (Vygotsky, 1978). Once I knew the ZPD of the students, I changed my teaching strategies to meet their learning needs. For example, I designed a series of the interventions to scaffold the students through their ZPD to improve their learning. For instance, I identified that some students in my year 7 Maths have Math ability below year 7, and they could not understand some certain Math concepts. I, therefore, used to individually reteach them those concepts during the exercise time, and showed them to work on some simple worked examples to help them to understand the…
