I take time out of every class to get to know my students on a personal level and that has really helped build rapport in and out of the classroom. I have students that do not get along in my classes, but I usually never have issues because they know that my classroom does not allow for any disrespect. On the same page, students have a clear understanding about how much I care about them and their learning, so I tend to think that I have earned mutual respect. Although my classroom is very relaxed, we still have a clear routine. When I even try to deviate from our normal routine, students notice and get a bit frazzled. They are truly creatures of habit and like routine. Each class is different and it takes some minor training in the first week or so, but my expectations are simple to learn and catch on quickly. Recently, I had another class join mine due to a staff member being sick. The new students were unfamiliar with my classroom routine and how things go and behaviors were not up to par.
