Sample Reflective Essay

In my classroom, objectives are clear to all students, so I ranked myself at proficient. I start each class with them visible on the board. Sometimes, we cover the prior day’s objectives in a starting activity as an informal assessment of knowledge, and other days we start with what the day’s objectives are and what I hope students will gain from the lesson. I follow our school’s Marzano method in regards to having visible objectives to students that are clear and concise. I have the thought process that it helps give guidance to the day’s lesson by having a clear direction and objective visible to all students and a helpful reminder to myself.

I take time out of every class to get to know my students on a personal level and that has really helped build rapport in and out of the classroom. I have students that do not get along in my classes, but I usually never have issues because they know that my classroom does not allow for any disrespect. On the same page, students have a clear understanding about how much I care about them and their learning, so I tend to think that I have earned mutual respect. Although my classroom is very relaxed, we still have a clear routine. When I even try to deviate from our normal routine, students notice and get a bit frazzled. They are truly creatures of habit and like routine. Each class is different and it takes some minor training in the first week or so, but my expectations are simple to learn and catch on quickly.
