Professionalism is the core feature of all careers including nursing. Although there is some debate that nursing is not a profession, yet the need of professionalism in nursing job is indispensable. Nursing professionalism is exhibited through the use of cognitive, attitudinal, and psycho-motor skills. Nursing professionalism is a continuous, dynamic, variable, and a complex process that involves the use of nursing knowledge and evidence based data and experience. Professionalism in nursing does not appear in days, it is a process that begins at the level of a novice thinker having basic understanding and goes far upto the level of a critical thinker who can practice with authority and responsibility. Varying Levels of Education for Entry into Practice: Majority of the professions like Law, Medicine, Dentistry requires atleast a bachelor degree to practice but nursing profession has three entry levels to start practicing. According to David in textbook on Professionalism in nursing, these three entry levels of nursing is the reason for failure in developing a unified identity for nurses and in addition has led to conflicts among nurses with different educational levels. This barrier also relates to the patient safety as evidenced by the findings of some studies that show that the patients looked after by BSN nurses have better outcomes as compared to other under bachelorette nurses.
