In the 21st century, play is an indispensable part of the children’s lives. Pretend play, also known as dramatic play or make-believe play, is very common among children. Either at school, at home or anywhere, children use their imagination to take on a role with or without any objects and scenes. In this essay, I am going to write about a play activity, which is pretend play, supported with some play theories and what the role of teachers is to enhance children’s development through pretend play.

First of all, I will talk about the background information of the play activity. In a classroom, there are a maximum of six students, who are aged between two to three years old, playing in the Home Corner during Grouping Time, which lasts around one hour. During Grouping Time, students can go freely into different corners, including the Home Corner, Toys Corner, Reading Corner or Art Corner to play. They can also participate in the activities that the teacher has prepared for them. According to their wishes, they can choose any one of the corner that they want to play in without any limitations or limited time. They can also take turns to go to

In this stage, children start to pretend play and will use different objects to enhance their play experience, but there are still limited by children’s experience and imagination. Also, children will develop constructive play. They will use different items such as blocks or Lego to build a new object. In a nursery classroom, children are around two years old, and they like to participate in symbolic play. They will stay in the Home Corner, and pretend to cook and eat food using different materials. If children have advanced cognitive development, they can pretend to be a waiter and ask others what they want to eat, while their classmates pretend to be the diners who sit on a chair and wait for food to
