The Joys Of Practicing

Nobody likes practicing, for anything. Many endeavors would be so much easier if people were just masters of anything they pursued. However, the world would be extremely bland if that were the case. Practicing an instrument is no different. Much of the time spent practicing an instrument can be tedious, frustrating and ultimately discouraging. Personally, my practice sessions usually consist of myself, sitting alone, in a room for upwards of an hour, practicing the same part over and over and over again. Often times during these sessions I hyper-criticize myself for every mistake and must repeat a part until I can play the section perfectly, then rinse and repeat for the next section. Not exactly my favorite way to spend my free time, and the …show more content…
It can be difficult not to become frustrated whenever someone is alone, with only themselves to blame for any mistakes. With no one else to alleviate the effort onto, and no one present to help give constructive criticism, every mistake becomes glaringly obvious. The noticeability of what someone is doing incorrectly becomes increasingly obvious, when that same person could be doing everything else perfectly. If that mindset gets the better of someone, it is a slippery slope from there, eventually reaching a point where the practicing is actually more harmful than beneficial
Another problem that many people run into while practicing is that it can be physically demanding, perhaps not to the degree of many sports, but still taxing nonetheless. A problem that I often run into whilst practicing is my embouchure becoming tired and/or sore. Embouchure is an essential part of playing an instrument, without embouchure it becomes impossible to even produce a sound from any wind-instrument. Whether it be on the stage or in the audition room, when I perfectly play the section I have spent hours and hours fine tuning, that is one of the best feelings I can describe. Then, when the piece is over, and the audience applauds, knowing that I had an outstanding performance makes all the long hours of practice worth it. The audience does not consider how much practice I (or anyone else) put in, the hardships any musician has to overcome in order to prepare a piece of music, they only experience the performance, the final product. So in a way, musicians are performing solely for the audience, so it is a musician’s job to impress them, and doing so feels amazing.
I doubt that practicing an instrument is anyone’s favorite pastime, although it is definitely something extremely beneficial in the long run. Not only does practicing ensure a successful performance, it also increases musical prowess, an extremely long term benefit. The better someone is at their instrument, the better music they can play, therefore increasing their prowess even further and providing better performances for their audience. Practicing works like a never-ending cycle, because with music especially, there is always

Working with diligence for me requires being alone for a majority of the day and if I were not comfortable with being by myself, I would have trouble working as carefully as I do. I have plenty of extraverted friends that have trouble spending a large amount of time alone to study or work on essays. When asked if I had the same problem and told them no, they would be bewildered at how I could sit there for hours alone just to perfect an essay. I’d be teased by them and called a “nerd”; my large framed glasses definitely did not help with this…

As it was discussed in the article “narcissism at work”, narcissists are unable to adapt to change which makes them believe that their knowledge and methods are the absolute truths. By having this erratic notion, they aren’t accepting to new experiences as they don’t allow others to criticize them nor provide them with feedback which could actually be beneficial. Thus, by overestimating their capabilities, they are more likely to participate in risky situations without evaluating all the available information or by selectively choosing the information that suits them to achieve their goals. This tendency of relying on previous successes and being overconfident could harm the organization and cause large…

Researchers from Stanford found out that people who boast and think they are experienced in the task of multitasking actually do WORSE than those who worked on one thing at a time. Unfortunately, perfection is not attainable and it has been something I have struggled with my entire life in my classes and in work. In school, no grade less than an A was acceptable. When I would receive a B in a class, I would do all the extra credit work I could and I would study that subject late at night when I should have been sleeping. I would be insanely stressed until I could bring my grade up, and even when I did, I would stress myself out trying to maintain an A. Every homework assignment I would get would have to be perfect, usually meaning that I worked on it for hours more than the average student would.…
