Learning is an act of getting new knowledge or modifying and reinforcing the existing knowledge, skills, preferences, behaviors, or values and may involve combining different types of information. Every humans possess the ability to learn and it does not happen all at once, but builds up and is affected by previous knowledge. To this effect learning can be seen as a process, instead of a collection of factual and procedural knowledge. Children may learn to identify objects at an early age, while teenagers learn to improve study habits, and adults may learn to solve complex problems. Learning brings about changes in humans and these changes that are produced are relatively permanent.
Learning in humans can be as a result of schooling, education, training or personal development. Learning could be goal-oriented and may be aided by motivation. It may occur as a result of more complex activities such as play or as a result of classical conditioning or habituation. The process that occurs when a client and counsellor set aside to explore difficulties which may be stressful or emotional feelings of the client. The aim of counselling is for the counsellor to help the client realize change in behaviour or attitude, or to seek achievement of goals. It is a relationship of trust and confidentiality is paramount to successful counselling. Professional counsellors will usually explain their policy on confidentiality that they may however by law require to disclose information if they believe that there is a risk to life.
