Reflective Essay Of My Writing

I am currently a freshman at the University of New Orleans. Being a freshman, I had to take English 1157 with Ms. Hemm. I have written quite a bit of papers over the semester. During this time, I have grown as a writer. I have had struggles, failures, and success but my writing is a continuous work in progress. There were plenty of nights where my friends went out parting and I stayed in to complete a writing project that was due.
When I entered my first year of college, I was pretty confident in my writing. In high school I written plenty of essays, and research papers which I made good grades on. I knew how to research topics, use proper information to write my thesis, and also how to properly us MLA format. Receiving my first writing

Hemm worked with me to improve the sense of organization and unity in my writing. She told me that I wasn’t a bad writer but that I had plenty of room to grow and become a better writer. What I find most interesting about writing is the fact that I can express any and everything through the written words. I can do this so much better in writing then verbally. John 2
For instants, my personal narrative paper let me express my feelings and thoughts about my experience during the time of hurricane Katrina. I wrote about things that I probably wouldn’t tell people when I’m talking about Katrina. However, I was able to write these things down and really explain how I was feeling. One form of writing I wrote that I never wrote before coming to college was a profile. I didn’t know what it was or how to even write one. I later found that I was actually good at writing a profile. I enjoyed interviewing people and writing about them with a purpose. I struggled a little with it but was able to overcome my struggles and receive a letter grade of a

It was a bit of a challenge to have to research and incorporate what I found in my research into the paper. However it helped me learn proper ways to research and also showed me all of the resources that I have that I didn’t know I had. I learned about the University’s library website and the search engine that only shows me reliable websites. I’m pretty sure this will help me future papers that I will have to write though out college.
Additionally to writing these papers, I had to get help. The most effective way of help for me was with feedback from Ms.Hemm, Anna, and my peers. I was able to get my papers evaluated and edited by different people with different options which showed me different ways to write certain things in my papers. Being critiqued on my writing styles by my peers. I was able to learn a great deal about their writing, get good feedback, and improve on my papers dramatically. Even though I wrote some good papers this semester, I believe that I can write some better ones and improve the not so great ones. Before I didn’t really like writing, but now I can’t say that I still feel the same way. I enjoy writing and conducting interviews, writing about my pass, and just writing my feelings and thoughts. I learned the type of writing that I enjoy, which is

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Throughout my educational career standardized testing has been a major part in determining whether or not you can proceed to the next grade or whether you have to take the class again. A Lot of kids that were my age when I had to take the STAAR test usually dreaded having to take a standardized test like the STAAR English II exam. I was no different, I was one of those kids who just wanted to get this test done with and move one. For a while this philosophy of mine worked, however that all would change when I ended up failing the English II STAAR test during my sophomore year of high school. Thus leading to a change in how I would view standardized testing and how my writing composition skills would eventually improve and affect my life.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
